Omschrijving

Bera Vittorio e Figli The family estate was established in 1785, when the ancestors of Alessandra Bera bought some of the land from the Knights of Malta that brought the Moscato grapes with them. Viticulture had been well-established since the 13th century, especially the Moscato grapes. The fame of this single grape and of the Moscato d’Asti wine rose from the 18th century into a worldwide fame in the 19th and 20th century. Similarly to the wine of Prosecco, its quality was badly hurt by the growing demand and the increasing use of technology with high volume in mind instead of quality. However, alike Casa Coste Piane in Prosecco, Bera’s family always stressed quality over quantity. It was the first to estate-bottle and market the wine in its region of origin, the Canelli. The property is in Sant’Antonio di Canelli, in the region of Serra Masio, a region held as the oldest and most prestigious region for the Asti Spumante. The muscat blanc a petits grains is cultivated on steep, south-east facing slopes of calcerous marl, an ancient soil formation of oceanic origins. Viticulture is organic but they also stress the creation of an ecosystem in their 12ha property. All the winemaking, with indigenous yeast and hand harvest is done by Gian Luigi, Alessandra’s brother. Annual production of 70000 bottles. Grapes planted are Moscato Bianco di Canelli, Barbera, Dolcetto, Cortese, Vermentino, Arneis and Favorita. The vineyard is 12ha with vines between 10 and 80 years of age. They are certified organic. D.O.C.G. Moscato d’Asti 2019 Vineyard: family owned parcels and another recently bought all around the family’s house Grape variety: Moscato Bianco between 25 and 80 years old. Terroir: Calcareous clay Winemaking: Hand harvested, gently pressed and then racked in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then clarified using natural gelatin and racked off its lees. The juice ferments in a closed vat until 5,5% alcohol is reached along with a light fizz and then chilled down to stop the fermentation.
