Castilla y Leon (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Léon)
Bodegá y Viñedos Máestro Tejero : The only avant-gardist of Ribera
He works outside of the D.O legislation (e.g. Ribera del Duero). He works in spain’s the most conservative wine region. He planted his first vines in Almate on the river of the Rio Duraton near his hometown of Peñafiel. He doesn’t use new oak either. He farms organically and without additives or suplhur. “Vin Nature” since 2003, his wine region would have been the last place to look for such wines.
At first he sold to locals and a handful of importers but over the last five years he has acquired enough land (mostly abandoned or neglected old vine vineyards on outcrops of limestone and granite around the Ribeira del Duero and Madrid highlands. He now farms 9ha and runs two small bodegas, one near Peñafiel and the other in the remote Navalcarnero area, southwest of Madrid.
This is a natural wine without added yeasts and with very little, or no added sulphites. This leads to wines with great purity of fruit but might also lead to more outspoken aromas. Beware that this style might be different from what you are used to when drinking conventional wines.
