Domaine du Pech, Buzet.
The Domaine du Pech is located on the slopes of Sainte-Colombe-en-Bruilhois in the southern part of the Buzet appellation. Created in 1978, was farmed conventionally until 2002 (although it has not seen fertilizers in over 20 years), it was then farmed according to bio-dynamical principles, along with the implementation of manual harvest. Ludovic Bonnelle and Magali Tissot farm 17hectares of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Magali’s father, Daniel Tissot is the son of an old family of vignerons in the Jura and had been making great wines in Buzet since 1980. Ludovic and Magali took over in 1997 and make radically different wines to other growers of the sout-west of France, expressing the taste of their soil and wild fruit without additives.
A.O.C. Buzet “Le Pech Abusé” 2015
Vineyard 1,8 hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Franc 2,3ha and Cabernet Sauvignon 1,5ha.
Grape variety: each vintage is blended differently to achieve balance
Terroir: clay with chalk and gravel
Winemaking: hand harvested and vinified in stainless steel vats, aged in 200 years old oak foudres for three to five years.
Le Pech Abusé is a mix of Merlot (40%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Cabernet Franc (40%), a garnet-hued wine mellowed in old oak foudres after égrappage and three weeks vinification in stainless steel vats, developing striking prune and leather aromas after several years in the bottle.
This is a natural wine without added yeasts and with very little, or no added sulphites. This leads to wines with great purity of fruit but might also lead to more outspoken aromas. Beware that this style might be different from what you are used to when drinking conventional wines.
