James Suckling (94/100): "This is extremely well-crafted with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful depth of fruit. Blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate and hints of hazelnut. Full body, fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Hints of tar and chocolate too. A blend of the best vineyards on the Maquis estate. Made from carmenere and cabernet franc. Drink or hold."
The Maquis Carménère par Excellence Viola is the product of identifying the best vineyards on the Maquis estate, and then choosing the individual rows where the vines produce particularly tiny grapes and especially concentrated fruit that results in wine with silky tannins and great depth. The skills of the viticulturist, Xavier Choné, and the blenders, Jacques and Eric Boissenot, are clearly apparent in this balanced and elegant blend. The spices, black fruit and smooth texture of the Carmenere, the principal component of the blend, are complemented by the extraordinary finesse and length on the palate of the Cabernet Franc. Tasting notes Viola is a Carmenère-based cuvée with Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon and is very true to its main varietal, showing soft, green, herbal flavours, a touch of new oak and the silky, refined tannins that are typical of the Maquis style.
